Heavy-Duty Drum Gear Coupling | Crowned Tooth Design · Angular Misalignment 1.5° · AGMA Interchangea

Drum gear couplings are particularly suitable for low-speed, heavy-load conditions and are widely used in shaft transmissions for metallurgy, mining, crane transport, petroleum, chemical, and general machinery.

Core Design Advantages:

  • Higher load capacity: 15–20% higher than straight-tooth couplings at same outer diameter

  • Greater angular misalignment compensation: Up to 1°30', 50% better than straight-tooth types

  • Superior contact conditions: Crowned tooth profile improves contact, eliminates edge loading and stress concentration found in straight teeth under angular misalignment

  • Transmission efficiency: Up to 99.7%

  • Easy assembly/disassembly: Bell-mouthed tooth ends on outer sleeve

Crowned tooth refers to a tooth profile with curved tooth trace in the working cross-section, improving contact conditions. ISO standard crowning amount: 10–40μm.

Manufacturing Methods:

  1. Tooth modification method: Gear blank rotates while moving forward/backward relative to tool; hob feeds vertically

  2. Envelope machining method (currently more common): Gear blank only rotates; hob center moves in arc for vertical and horizontal feeds

Process Route: Forged blank → normalizing → rough turning → semi-finish turning → gear hobbing (crowned tooth tooling) → carburizing + hardening → finish turning → gear grinding → tooth profile inspection (CMM/gear tester) → assembly → dynamic balancing.

Material: 42CrMo or 45# carbon steel forgings, tooth surface HRC 58–62, core HRC 30–35.
